ウツボが訳す日本国憲法前文 （第1回）

作家の高橋源一郎が彼のコラム（http://www.mammo.tv/column/TakahashiG/bnumber.php）で、池澤夏樹の訳を例に挙げながら、日本国憲法を訳してみたら面白いんじゃないか、と提案していたので、不肖ながら挑戦してみようと思ってするものである。根本的な文法の間違いもあろうかと思うが、その際は忌憚なくご指摘頂きたい。念のために言っておくが、日本国憲法はGHQ（連合国軍総司令部）が英文で起草したということになっているので、日本語版は翻訳版なのである（と、高橋のコラムにも書いてある）。

では、参るぞ。まず最初の文！長いぜ！

We, the Japanese people, [acting through our duly elected representatives in the National Diet, determined that we shall secure for ourselves and our posterity the fruits of peaceful cooperation with all nations and the blessings of liberty throughout this land, and resolved that never again shall we be visited with the horrors of war through the action of government,] do proclaim that sovereign power resides with the people and do firmly establish this Constitution.

これで一文である。括弧をつけたactingからgovernmentまでは、この文の構造に直接的にかかわっているわけではない。重要なのは「We, the Japanese people, do proclaim that sovereign power resides with the people and do firmly establish this Constitution. 」という部分である、と思う。

まだまだ練り直す余地はあるだろうが、以下に原文、拙訳の順で置く。国の最高法規としての気品はないが、比較的わかりやすい訳になったと思う。いかがだろうか。

わたしたち日本人は、日本国では主権在民であることと、正式にこの憲法を定めることを、広く宣言する。その前提として、ふたつ決意したので付け加える。ひとつめの決意は、わたしたちが、きちんと選ばれた国会で活動する代表を通じて行動し、わたしたちとその子孫にたいし、以下の点にかんして保障することである。まず、世界中の国々との協力によって成り立つ平和がもたらす利益について、そして、この国の中であれば、好きなところへ行ったり住んだりできる自由について、である。ふたつめの決意は、政府の行動によって私たちに戦争の恐怖が二度と訪れないようにする、ということである。
